It’s a simple gesture. One that potters have always made. Coming from an ancestral tradition much older even than that of the territory of Dieulefit, where he was born in 1956, in the Drôme. Where he lives. And works. It’s an archaic gesture. He observed it for years in the pottery workshop of his parents, Rolande and Jacques Pouchain, until he in turn was won over. He was only seventeen. It wasn’t he who had captivated the earth, but rather the earth which had gradually stolen his heart. First to work on functional ware, and then on sculpture from 1981 onward. He exhibited as early as 1985, gradually leaving behind his status as artisan in order to take on that of artist in joining “La Maison des Artistes” in 1990. Since then, his sculptures have travelled throughout France and other countries, being exhibited in galleries, and in many private collections. …
The wheel, stamping, slips, alquifoux, he has used every tool and material available. Even bronze, which he has been working with since 2003, thus lending new power to his sculptures, never, however, neglecting his work with ceramics.
The pure lines of his pieces say a good deal about that interior mountaintop upon which his work is founded. Between light and shadow, for he who knows that one leads inevitably to the other. And vice versa.
